Traveling for a cruise means dressing for several different temperatures in one day. The airplane can be freezing, Miami can be hot and humid, and cruise-ship air-conditioning can make you wish you had brought another layer.

For this trip, I planned two outfits that kept me cool and comfortable while still helping me feel a little fancy. The secret was choosing simple pieces and bringing one lightweight kimono that I could wear throughout the trip.

Travel Day: A Black Maxi Dress and Easy Layers

For my flight to Miami, I wore a long black knit maxi dress with black sandals and a lightweight printed kimono.

The soft maxi dress was comfortable enough for sitting on the airplane, walking through the airport and handling all the usual travel-day activity. The kimono was the perfect layering piece because it gave me a little extra warmth on the chilly airplane without feeling heavy or bulky.

Once I arrived in Miami, it was hot! I simply removed the kimono and was immediately cooler in the sleeveless black dress. That is exactly why I love traveling with lightweight layers—you can adjust your outfit without needing to change completely.

The kimono also added personality to the simple black dress. Its black-and-cream print and burnt-orange trim made the outfit feel much more put together. Even better, it was a piece I could wear again the next day and throughout the cruise whenever I needed a little coverage.

An Easy Braided Bun for the Airplane

For my travel-day hair, I wore a braided bun hairpiece. It gave me a pretty updo without requiring a lot of styling time.

The bun already has small braids woven into it, so it looks much more complicated than it really is. I could pull my hair up, attach the hairpiece and be ready to go. It also kept my hair off my neck—which was especially nice once we reached hot and humid Miami.

This is a great option for an airplane day because it is easy, comfortable and still looks polished after traveling.

Cruise-Ready Tropical Nails

Of course, I also needed cruise-ready nails!

I chose bright pink nails with tropical accent designs featuring palm trees, blue water and tiny birds. They coordinated perfectly with the cruise theme and added a fun pop of color to both of my mostly black outfits.

They were an easy way to feel vacation-ready before I even stepped onto the ship.

First Day on the Ship: LIVI Active Comfort

For my first day on the ship, I wore a black sleeveless top and matching skort from Lane Bryant’s LIVI Active collection.

The top had light-colored trim around the neckline and arms, which added a little contrast to the all-black outfit. The coordinating skort gave me the look of a skirt with the extra comfort and coverage of shorts underneath.

This outfit was lightweight, comfortable and perfect for the hot Miami weather. It was also easy to move around in while boarding, exploring the ship and getting settled.

If I became chilly inside the air-conditioned areas, I could add the same kimono I wore on the airplane. Reusing that one layering piece gave me another complete look without taking up extra room in my suitcase.

For my first day on the ship, I pulled my hair up with a black lacy hair clamp.

It was another simple hairstyle that kept my hair off my neck in the heat while still looking a little fancy. A couple of ladies on the ship even stopped me to ask where I found it!

I believe it came from either SHEIN or Temu, but I honestly cannot remember which one. Either way, it was an inexpensive accessory that made an ordinary pulled-up hairstyle feel special.

Two Days, Two Comfortable Outfits

These two outfits worked perfectly for traveling and boarding the ship.

The black maxi dress was soft and comfortable for the airplane, while the kimono kept me warm during the flight. Once we reached Miami, I could remove the extra layer and stay cool.

The next day, my LIVI Active top and skort were perfect for boarding and exploring the ship. The same kimono was ready whenever I needed a little extra coverage in the air-conditioning.
