Getting Your Halloween Outfit Ready

Halloween is getting closer, and it is time to start thinking about what you want to wear! Whether your idea of dressing up is a cozy onesie pajama outfit or a costume with wings, glitter, and all the accessories, there is plenty of room to have fun.

Looking back through my Halloween pictures for my “Blast from the Past” reel has me excited to put together this year’s look. My biggest tip? Pick a costume you love, then think about where you will be wearing it—and what you can add if the weather changes.

Keep It Simple or Go All Out

You do not have to put together an elaborate costume to enjoy Halloween. A onesie pajama outfit can be your whole look. Add a pair of ears to something you already own, wear a Halloween shirt with jeans, or pull out a fun skirt and build a costume around it.

If you love going all out, enjoy the makeup, accessories, and extra sparkle! There is no requirement to dress up a certain way. Choose something that makes you feel good and fits the evening you have planned.

My Costume This Year Is a Dark Fairy

This year, I am going as a dark fairy. I already have my wings, wand, a corset-looking belt, body glitter, and a crown. Those are the pieces that will bring the fairy look together, and I can change what I wear underneath them depending on the weather.

I also have a couple of poofy skirts, both long and short, so I have options. I can play with the skirt length and layers without having to start over with a completely different costume. A little dark fairy sparkle is happening either way! The wings light up too!!

Have a Warm Version Ready for Outside

Here in Georgia, Halloween could be cold, or we could have a really nice day and evening. If I am going to be outside, I want a backup ready so I can keep enjoying myself when the temperature drops.

For a chilly evening, I can wear leggings under one of my poofy skirts and add a black long sleeve shirt. If it is really cold, I can wear leggings underneath black jeans instead. I also have sweaters and a black jacket that I can use for extra warmth.

The wings, crown, wand, and belt will still give me the dark fairy look. The layers just let me wear it comfortably!

If we have a nice day or night, I can skip the leggings. I can also start without them and bring a pair to put on later when I get cold, as long as I have somewhere to change. Having them ready is much easier than wishing I had brought them after the sun goes down.

Think About Where You Will Be Celebrating

An indoor party is a different situation. If you will be inside all evening, you may not need to build warm layers into the costume. You can choose your outfit around the party itself and bring a jacket for the trip there and back.

For an outdoor celebration, think through how your costume will work with long sleeves, leggings, a sweater, or a coat. Try those pieces on together ahead of time. You want to know that your jacket fits with your accessories and that you can move around comfortably.

And do not forget your shoes! An outfit you love will be much more enjoyable if you can comfortably stand and walk in it for the evening.

Try Everything On Before Halloween

Now is a good time to pull out what you already have and see what is missing. Try on the whole outfit, including shoes and accessories, instead of leaving it all in separate bags until Halloween.

For my dark fairy look, that means figuring out how the wings sit, where the belt works best, and which skirt I want to wear. I also want to see how everything looks with my warmer layers.

A quick practice run gives you time to make adjustments, find a missing piece, or decide that a simpler version feels better. It also gives you a chance to sit down and move around in the outfit—not just stand in front of the mirror.

A Little Planning Leaves More Time for Fun

You can enjoy Halloween in a onesie, a costume made from things in your closet, or something elaborate that you have been planning for weeks. Give yourself time to put it together, and if you will be outside, have a warmer version ready.

I am looking forward to my dark fairy look this year, with a little glitter and whatever layers Georgia decides I need!

What are you dressing up as this Halloween? Do you keep it cozy and simple, or do you love an elaborate costume? Tell me in the comments—I would love to hear what you are planning!
